The production of wound beads came from Venice - from the island of Murano. These beads are made manually from glass rods heated over a burner. The vitreous mass of different colours is shaped by tweezers and other instruments. The vitreous mass can be combined with pieces of metals, most popular are gold, silver and platinum. The final forms can be pure fantasy or very concrete, such as flowers, animals or bows. The production of wound beads calls for highly skilled craftsmen. Every piece is an original; wound beads are often used in fancy costume jewellery. Their prices are correspondingly high.
